What’s up at the Dingman Center?

Every two weeks, the Dingman Center distributes “The Pitch”, a bi-weekly digest that highlights happenings in our community. In case you missed it, here’s a look at what’s up in entrepreneurship:

Dingman Center Goes to London for Global Entrepreneurship Conference, and is Honored for Entrepreneurship Excellence

GCEC awardLast week, Dingman Center Managing Director Elana Fine and Associate Director Holly DeArmond traveled to London to attend the annual Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers Conference. GCEC is the largest annual gathering of entrepreneurship centers in the world and this year’s conference was hosted by the University College London from October 2-4, 2014. Elana was joined by G ‘Anand’ Anandalingam, Dean of the Imperial College Business School; Robert Rosenberg of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business; and Erin Draper from Clarkson University for a workshop titled, “Nurturing Enterprises or Entrepreneurs?”

During the conference, the Dingman Center also received the 2014 NASDAQ Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence Award.

Elana Fine accepted the award and had this to say: 
We are honored to be recognized by our peer entrepreneurship centers from around the world. Over the past several years, the Dingman Center has differentiated itself by offering a breadth of campus, regional, national and international programs. We pride ourselves on the impact these programs are making on our students and community and will continue to set a high bar for student entrepreneurship.

VCIC: Do you have what it takes to be a VC?

Interested in startups? Curious what it’s like to be a Venture Capitalist? Or, just looking to practice your negotiation skills? Join the Smith School and E-Club for the annual Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC). VCIC is a global competition that puts MBA students across the table from real entrepreneurs and give them a real look at what it takes to negotiate VC deal and term sheet.

Teams of five must register by Friday, October 17, 2014 at 11:59PM.

To register, send an email to eclub@rhsmith.umd.edu with:

  • Your team name
  • Names and email addresses for your five team members
  • Please also include the degree program and expected graduation date for all team members

One team member from each team must attend the VCIC Bootcamp that will be held at Van Munching Hall on Friday, October 24, 2014.

The Dingman Center is Hiring!

The Dingman Center is looking for a dynamic Program Manager of Regional & Alumni Venture Programs to join the team! The Program Manager will support several of the Center’s regional and alumni venture programs, including the Dingman Center Angels investor network, Dingman Venture Fellows startup internship program & Dingman Jumpstart. Upcoming Competition: FIA Seed Grant Competition – Applications due by Nov 10th!

Up to four teams of UMD students and their faculty mentors will be chosen to receive up to $25,000 per team to carry out a research project during the spring semester. The Future of Information Alliance (FIA) aims to engage students in research projects that lead the way to innovative solutions for key information-related challenges.

Why should you participate?

  • Meet thought leaders from renowned organizations.
  • Be part of a collaborative research experience.
  • Four student teams will win grants of up to $25,000.
  • Winning teams will be designated FIA-Deutsch Student Fellows and faculty will be FIA-Deutsch Faculty Fellows.
